Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but proper aftercare is essential if you want your tattoo to heal beautifully and maintain its color, detail, and vibrancy for years to come.
Whether it's your first tattoo or your fiftieth, understanding what your skin needs during each stage of healing can make all the difference.
This guide walks you through every step of the tattoo healing process. From leaving the tattoo studio to protecting your artwork for years after it's healed.
Why Tattoo Aftercare MATTERS
A fresh tattoo is more than just artwork, it's an open wound that needs proper care while your skin repairs itself.
Without proper aftercare, your tattoo is more susceptible to:
• Infection
• Excessive scabbing
• Fading
• Patchy healing
• Irritation and inflammation
A good aftercare routine helps:
• Support healthy healing
• Protect against outside contaminants
• Preserve color and fine detail
• Reduce itching and discomfort
Stage 1: Protect & HEAL Your Tattoo (Day 0–7)
Immediately after your tattoo is finished, your artist will apply a protective bandage or tattoo film.
If your artist applies Saniderm®, follow their instructions for how long to leave it in place. Most artists recommend wearing the initial application for several days unless the seal becomes compromised.
Saniderm creates a breathable, waterproof barrier that protects your fresh tattoo from dirt, bacteria, and outside contaminants while allowing your body's natural healing process to do its job.
During this stage you can continue most normal daily activities, including showering, while following your artist's recommendations.

Stage 2: Keep It Clean (Days 2–14)
Once your bandage is removed, keeping your tattoo clean becomes the priority.
Wash your hands first, then gently clean your tattoo using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
Gently remove any remaining plasma or debris before patting the area dry with a clean paper towel.
Avoid:
• Washcloths
• Loofahs
• Sponges
• Scrubbing the tattoo
Clean skin creates the ideal environment for healthy healing.

Stage 3: Hydrate Your Healing Skin (Weeks 2–6)
As your tattoo begins peeling, flaking, and itching, your skin needs moisture.
Apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific lotion to keep the skin hydrated without over-moisturizing.
During this stage you may notice:
• Peeling
• Dryness
• Mild itching
• A cloudy appearance
All of these are normal parts of healing.
Even after the peeling stops, your skin continues repairing beneath the surface for several more weeks. Continuing to moisturize helps support this deeper healing process. Shop Tattoo Daily Lotion.

Stage 4: Maintaining Your Tattoo (For Life)
Healing doesn't end after the first month or so.
Your tattoo will continue facing daily exposure to sunlight, dry skin, friction, and environmental stress for years.
Keeping your tattoo moisturized helps preserve the bold colors, crisp lines, and overall appearance that made you fall in love with it in the first place.
Tattoo balm is an easy addition to your long-term skincare routine. Apply it whenever your tattoo feels dry or whenever you want your ink looking its absolute best.
Balm helps your tattoos continue looking healthy and vibrant long after they've healed. Shop OG Tattoo Balm.
